> Imagine being rendered obsolete by mere scrolls. Objectively worse than Persuasion or Deception given that Charm Person expressly turns them hostile after 60 seconds. A rogue is still gonna be better at any of it than a wizard. Sure it lets you do stuff at a distance, but you’re still limited to things your untrained fingers are capable of doing. Your stealth ability is still tied to the fact that you’re an untrained wizard who’s little better than a bumbling armor-clad knight when compared to a real Rogue. That’s why being invisible at most should grant advantage, but definitely not an automatic success. Perception checks are as much about hearing people as seeing them. Invisibility also doesn’t help in any way, shape, or form when you’re trying to be quiet. ![]() Now it could reasonably be argued that it should grant advantage, but a wizard with, say, Dexterity +3, but not trained in Stealth, is actually worse than a Rogue with even a +8 bonus (+2 proficiency, +2 Expertise, +4 Dexterity). Read the description of invisibility: it doesn’t actually expressly give any bonus to Stealth checks. Great! You can expend a spell slot to be worse than a rogue with expertise in Stealth. Knock is only useful if you don’t mind getting swarmed by enemies or if there’s no more enemies left to swarm. Sure, if you don’t mind the loud KNOCK that is expressly heard (no check required) by creatures up to 300 feet away. Imagine being rendered obsolete by mere scrolls. >5e: Sneak attack is utterly trivial to trigger, even if you're limited to one attack a round, and you can easily jump from cover to cover to be hidden all the time, you can move super fast, get out of melee for free, never fail a skill check you're trained in, and oh yeah, you can be a caster too if you go with arcane trickster to have all the tricks However, if you're playing PF, just be an investigator instead, since that's even better at all of those things. And you've got UMD to do wizard shit when it's needed. You've got enough skill points to do a pile of things. >3.x: You're a competent enough martial to get in a few hits and sneak attack damage stacks up against anything that isn't immune to precision damage, like mortal wizards. They tend to be the class that serves as the midpoint of balance in modern D&D editions.Ĭan't speak to 4e rogue since I've actually never seen one in play, but: You don't know what you're talking about. The lodestone would not be common by any means, but it's no rarer than gems, which could be bought or imported for the right price.īear in mind, most of these don't consume their component. Iron filings could be bought from any blacksmith. Reverse Gravity (level 7): A lodestone and iron filings. By the time you're casting level 8 spells you can afford to import semi-precious stones.Ĭone of Cold (level 5): A small crystal or glass cone. Mercury would be tougher, but humans have been mining it for millenia and using it for medicine, alchemy, and fabric treatment.ĭark Star (level 8): Shard of onyx and a drop of the caster's blood. It was often used for watertight seals from shipbuilding to food preservation, torches too. Maddening Darkness (level 8): A drop of pitch mixed with a drop of mercury. Both would be readily available for purchase at any sizable market. See Invisibility (level 2): A pinch of talc and a small sprinkling of powdered silver. Could be a pain sure, but not that hard.Ĭontrol Water (level 4): A drop of water and a pinch of dust. Summon Lesser Demons (level 3): Vial of blood from a humanoid killed within 24 hours. But druid is the least popular class so internet retards always pretend it doesn't exist in these conversations. Seriously idk if you've ever actually played the game but "DUDE JUST TAKE THEIR COMPONENT POUCH" is unironically peak whiteroomer, in an actual campaign it's a nonfactor besides a scripted "okay you guys are captured and disarmed" in which point a caster using only verbal and somatic spells is still 100x better off than a fighter without armor and weapons (and a druid can still just wildshape lmao oh well a fucking grizzly bear breaks them out of the cell). ![]() Okay I'm a psychic sorcerer and have no verbal, somatic, or material components. Okay I'm a druid and my focus is a fucking stick ![]() Okay I'm actually a divine class and my holy symbol is worn on a chain around my neck and held in place by a gorget or on a shield strapped to my arm Okay I have a backup pouch because they cost less than a crossbow or single healing potion does Okay I just cast spells with verbal or verbal and somatic components
